Chloe

The next two months were interesting.

Chloe and Hadley began seeing each other regularly, going on “dates” and hanging out whenever they got the chance. They would often meet at the dog park, allowing their dogs to play while they sat on a bench nearby and watched fondly while talking about whatever interested them at the moment. Chloe enjoyed listening to Hadley talk about how her day had gone at work, always interested to hear about what kind of animals she’d seen and how their health was coming along. She didn’t mind lending an ear when Hadley needed to rant if her day had been bad either, and Hadley found that she enjoyed having someone to talk to rather than always having to keep her frustrations pent up.

Sometimes, there were animals that she just couldn’t do anything to help. Some were old and on their last legs, some were sick with cancerous tumors or other life-threatening illnesses that she could do nothing to fix, and some had illnesses that could be fixed, but their owners just didn’t have the money to pay for their treatments or surgeries, so they still, unfortunately, had to be put down. Those kinds of situations were the absolute worst, in Hadley’s opinion. Knowing that she could, in theory, help the animal, but wasn’t able to simply because of a lack of funds. She hated it and wished that she could just help everyone for free. Animals didn’t deserve to have their lifespans shortened simply because of a lack of money. But unfortunately, she couldn’t afford to pay for the surgeries herself, and she couldn’t do it for free unless she wanted to have to answer to higher-ups and be fired, so it was a problem that she just couldn’t fix.

It did make her feel better to be able to talk to someone, and Chloe didn’t mind listening to Hadley talk for hours on end about it. She listened closely, genuinely paying attention and trying to offer Hadley any source of comfort that she could. She offered her shoulder to cry on and even found herself crying with Hadley too, which ultimately made them both feel the slightest bit better.

Hadley offered a listening ear for Chloe too, and Chloe greatly appreciated being able to talk about the things that she was passionate about with someone who didn’t tell her to be quiet after a certain amount of time or scoff and turn up their nose because they didn’t think that her passions were interesting or profitable enough.

She’d tried to speak to her parents and brothers about her love for photography in the past, but they’d all disregarded it as a dumb and pointless hobby; a waste of time and a distraction from what was really important—her studies and her work.

She’d tried to speak to her “friend” about it, but Ella had merely called it lame. “You’re supposed to strive to be the one in front of the camera,” she’d giggled. “Not behind it. You’d get more benefits if you were a model as opposed to a photographer.
